The pc engine was an 8 bit machine that was released during the time of NEX and spectrum.
Its stand out quality, besides the fact that it harbored great games, was the fact that it was the first console to use CD’s a means of playing games. The size of its games was just so big that they would fit in a cartridge.
Today its games survive in cult circles and if you just so happen to be a part of that circle or just want to try something new/different then you are at the right place because this tutorial will show you how to get the emulator that runs the PC engine games on a computer using the turbo engine emulator.
Step 1: Getting the necessary files
Download the actual emulator from http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/pcengine/turbo-engine.html
Next, you will need a BIOS to run the games in the emulator so search for it on google (try to find anything at or above Ver. 3).
Create a new folder and name it Turbo. Then create a sub folder in Turbo and name it games (this is where you will put your game Iso’s)
You should also download some games to play, for that go here http://www.emuparadise.me/PC_Engine_-_TurboGrafx16_ROMs/16
Step 2: Setting up the emulator
Extract the downloaded emulator into the Turbo folder. Navigate to that folder and double click Turbo engine.exe to open the emulator.
This emulator is obviously playing a game but yours wont do so from the get go. First navigate to System è Configuration and configure the keyboard keys you want to use to control in game actions.
Next, go to Video è Resolution to select the type of resolution that is appropriate for your PC. Know that this option has a different ‘right’ choice for different PC’s so I suggest you tweak around the resolutions a bit to see which choice goes well with yours’.
Finally go to sound è Configure and set the sound levels as well as the channel strength.
Step 3: Playing the game
Now that we are done with all the technical part of setting up this wondrous piece of software, it’s time we took it out for a spin. Click File è Open and navigate to the Games folder where you have kept all your game ISO’s. Then double click the iso of the game you want to play and start enjoying the magic of the golden generation of gaming.
