Mupen64Plus is an open source N64 emulator that runs on multiple platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and even android. This the best Nintendo 64 emulator because Mupen is a plug in based system that allows you to configure different graphics, video settings, and play a large variety of N64 games on your PC. Today we will be covering install and playing the Windows version of Mupen.

Downloading
Update: We added a download link at the top of this page for Windows systems.

Downloading Mupen was a little tricky. If you do a Google search for Mupen64Plus your top web page will take you to the project homepage. That’s where I went naturally but found that this was a developer’s page where you could download the source code. It also contains instructions on how to build Mupen. I personally found this to be a little overwhelming and not practical. However if you change your search to “Mupen64Plus Windows” and then scroll down you will find a variety of websites that will provide a traditional windows installer for Mupen. The one I picked was titled “Mupen64” in Google. I downloaded this file.

Installing
Once you find a traditional windows installer for Mupen, installation should be a breeze. Double-click on the install file and then follow the on screen instructions. Once the install is finished, Mupen will be available on your system. However, the particular installer I used didn’t create any start menu shortcuts. Instead I had to navigate to my “Program Files” folder and then click on the program.

Configuring
Mupen is highly configurable. In the main window you will see the regular “File” menu along with “Emulation”, “Options”, “Utilities”, and “Help”. You will want to become familiar with these prior to playing. This is especially true for the “Options” menu. If you click on this you will see the “Settings” option. Click on this menu. A screen will appear that allows you to configure the plugins. You will be interested in the “Input Plugin” where you will want to click on “Configure”. This screen will show you how your keyboard is mapped to the N64 game. You can change the controls if you like, but you will more than likely want to write down which keys do what prior to playing. The N64 game system has a lot of buttons and you won’t be able to check which keys do what once you are playing.

Getting ROMs
You will need to get ROMs in order to use Mupen. Since the ROMs are subject to copyright, I will not provide information on how to obtain them. Make sure you are compliant with the laws of your country prior to downloading a rom.
Playing Once you have found ROMs, you can play the game. Click on the File–>Load Rom and select the ROM file. The emulation will begin and you will be able to play the game just as if you were using an actual Nintendo 64 system. If you find that the game runs slow, then try downloading different Mupen plugins on the Internet to see if it makes a difference.
