The ColecoVision was first introduced in 1982 and it was incredibly powerful.
It was the most advanced console in the market and out gunned its nearest competitors (Atari 5200 and Intellevision) on both specs and games. However, the console and it’s manufacturer was hit hard when the gaming industry collapsed in the early 80’s and, eventually, ColecoVision, not being able to cope up with the loss and not finding success in the colecovisions pc port (ColecoAdam) and the falling industry went out of business in 1984.
The console maybe gone but fans of its games still exists so, If you just so happen to be such a fan or maybe just a stranger passing by looking for something old yet new, then you have come to the right place. This tutorial will help you to set up your very own Bee emulator, to emulate ColecoVision games on the pc. Its fast simple and takes only 3 steps.
Step 1: Getting the necessary files
Download the actual emulator’s zip file from http://www.thebeehive.ws/download/ while that’s downloading go to google and search for the SDL library. Once you’ve found it, download it immediately.
Next create a folder and name it Bee then create a sub folder within the newly made folder and name it Games (this is where you will keep all your roms).
You will also need to download the BIOS file (which we can’t give to you because it’s illegal to do so). To get that google it, shouldn’t be too tough to find given that there are so many versions of it out there.
Next you will need to download and install the latest version of SDL, which you can find and do by looking around google a bit.
Finally, you will need to get the roms of the games that you want to play. In order to get them go here http://www.freeroms.com/colecovision.htm
Step 2: Setting up the emulator
Extract the downloaded zip of the emulator into the Bee folder. Then navigate to that folder and double click bee.exe to open the emulator.
Once the emulator has shown up go to settings è Configure Joypad to set up the controls you want to use.
Next, go to Video è Resolution to select the type of resolution that is appropriate for your PC. Know that this option has a different ‘right’ choice for different PC’s so I suggest you tweak around the resolutions a bit to see which choice goes well with yours’.
Finally go to sound è Configure and set the sound levels as well as the channel strength.
Step 3: Playing the game
Now that we are done with all the technical part of setting up this wondrous piece of software, it’s time we took it out for a spin.
